Management Competency Development
Using Enquire Within®, founded on the Repertory Grid interview, as a management competencies assessment tool to develop management competency models sensitive to the future needs of the business as an aid to managing change; also identifying the gap between the competencies which used to be valued in the past and those which will be required by the demands of the future.
Management Competencies
Management Competencies have been all the rage for the past few years, but it is open to question how much good has been done for the money spent. Many competency studies have failed to deliver, for any or all of the following reasons:
- they impose an external framework on the organisation, which may not fit the subtleties of the organisation’s own culture;
- they fail to involve managers in their development, thus ensuring lack of ownership;
- they replicate the past competencies, and fail to address the issues of the size of the gap between past and future and how it is to be bridged.
Using the Enquire Within process a set of competencies will be obtained which:
- is the organisation’s own, expressed in their language and reflecting their business priorities;
- involves managers in their development, thus ensuring their commitment to the competences and to the demands which might be made on them in order to bring the competences to life;
- ensures that the gap between past and future competences has been addressed, with action plans as appropriate.
- Enquire Within can be used on its own, or to help design an organisation-wide questionnaire for a more thorough coverage. The continuous theme running through this configuration of Enquire Within is ownership: that the best competency statement in the world is close to useless unless line managers buy into it.
This configuration of Enquire Within can be used by consultants to build a database of competency analyses in different organisations, thereby enabling a client to benchmark themselves against suitable comparators in their sector.
