Repertory Grid Used to Support a Study Programme

About using Enquire Within®, an interactive software application based on Repertory Grid interviewing, to measure the student's knowledge and direct the student to the priority areas for learning. Enquire Within will accompany the student in the enrichment of their understanding, giving instant feedback on the growth in their comprehension, at their own pace. It teaches navigation and pattern-recognition skills, and encourages rigorous disciplined thinking. It also supports students in developing dissertations.

Developing Cognitive Maps

One of the more addictive uses for the Enquire Within application of repertory grid is to develop your cognitive map about a topic you are studying. As you progress, Enquire Within will gently but inexorably point you to:

  • Areas where you need to know more,
  • Where you need to refine your knowledge,
  • Issues where your prejudices and stereotypes need to be challenged, etc.

Enquire Within does not compare what you have told it with some internal ideal model of effective thinking; it works only with what you have told it, analyses it, and presents it back to you for you to consider. So, when you use it to examine your knowledge of a hobby or study topic, you can pace your own learning and get instant feedback on the growth of your cognitive map.

As an Adjunct to Study

You can use it as an adjunct to any form of study (except mathematics). You can grow and challenge you cognitive map about characters in literature, significant historical figures, dinosaurs, toxins and pharmaceuticals, art and artists ... the list is literally endless.

Used in this way, Enquire Within will also help you design the shape of an essay or dissertation.

As a Teacher

Parents and teachers will discover that curious children (secondary level and above) find Enquire Within invaluable; it acts like a good teacher, constantly challenging and testing the bounds of their knowledge, but at their own pace and with instant feedback.

Learning to Learn

It teaches ‘learning to learn’ skills, conceptual skills, and navigation skills, with instant feedback at the student’s own pace. Whether you do it for fun as part of a hobby, or seriously as part of a study programme, you might find it difficult to tear yourself away.
